Toby was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. The son of a Real Estate agent and Lawyer, Toby knew he was destined for comedy at an early age. He begged his parents to enrol him at Vancouver Youth Theatre where he discovered the joys of improvisation. At sixteen years old he became the youngest professional Theatresports player in Vancouver with the Vancouver Theatresports League. Toby enjoyed seven years as a top player, but knew there was more to acting than just goofing around in front of a sold out house every night.
Toby’s next step was to audition for the toughest professional acting school in Canada, Studio 58. Training at Studio 58 opened up Toby as a person and an actor. After graduating in 1997 Toby toured all across North America for one and half years performing in Children’s Theatre and when he returned to Vancouver was rewarded with a recurring role in six episodes of Slightly Bent TV, a sketch comedy show on the Comedy Network. The show was picked up for a second season and renamed Suckerpunch and they made Toby a series lead of the show for thirteen episodes, which also created an opportunity for Toby to be one of the writers for the series. Other Comedy Network credits include Point Blank and Skull Duggery, Toby has also appeared on TV in such unfunny shows as Da Vinci’s Inquest and Jeremiah.
Not only is Toby Berner a successful professional actor, writer, improvisor, but he plays drums in the punk rock band BACON, and he juggles, tap dances, skateboards…..and all at the same time if you need him too.
